Broadcast Reads is a post series where I recommend you books based off the shows you like and vice versa.
This July, I binge read the His Fair Assassin Series as part of the Summer of Series reading challenge. Grave Mercy was a little lack luster for me, but because so many people love this series and because I had to complete one series a month for the challenge I decided to read on. Dark Triumph is a freaking amazing book and Mortal Heart was great as well. I reviewed the entire series after I read it, you can read all of my thoughts on the books in that post.
Are you a fan of the His Fair Assassin Series?
Then you should be watching The Bastard Executioner.
Magic, court drama, action, betrayal, and mystery all await you if you decide to start watching this fall premiere. This show is definitely for a more mature audience because it does feature violence and mature content since it is on FX.
What do they have in common?
1. Strong Female Characters
Lady Love may not be an assassin, but she has that same strength that you see in Anne. She is a realistic interpretation of a strong royal woman of the time. She has a strong loyalty to her people and has the intelligence to do anything in her power to make sure that Wales remains her's.
2. Magic As A Side Element
Katey Sagal plays Annora, a healer who has some form of magic, Annora is a character that you can't help but love. Though you aren't sure if you can trust her all the time. The His Fair Assassin is about a convent for Death, but the majority of the story has no magic in them. Magic adds to the tone and mystery of both of these stories.
3. Action and Battles
There are a ton of fight and action sequences in this show. At times it can be rather brutal especially where torture is inflicted, after all this is a show about an executioner.
4. Period Drama
I am a sucker for a period piece, especially medieval England. These two series are essentially around the same time, within a hundred years or so, and both show sides of history that we aren't necessarily used to hearing
No one ships Lady Love and Wilkin like I do. These two are just chemistry, every single second, and I basically spend every scene that they are in together wanting them to kiss.
6. Dark Tone
Dark Triumph is especially dark in its tone and themes. The Bastard Executioner is a very dark show and I love it for it.
7. Evil Characters You Love To Hate
Every book of the His Fair Assassin had a character that you loved to hate. Robin LaFevers can write a great villain. Stephen Moyer plays the Chamberlain to Lady Love and he is just such a horrible person.
And if for nothing else you should watch The Bastard Executioner for the opening credits theme song... No Name by Ed Sheeran.
THIS SONG IS BEAUTIFUL! The juxtaposition of Sheeran's voice and the images of weapons used for torture is really stunning.
Have you read the His Fair Assassin Series? What did you think? Are you watching The Bastard Executioner? If not are you thinking about starting?
