Title: The Sweet Spot
Series: Companion to Big Girl Panties
Author: Stephanie Evanovich
Genre: Adult Romance
Received: For Review
Published: March 24th, 2015 by William Morrow & Company
Readers were captivated by Stephanie Evanovich’s highly-anticipated New York Times bestselling debut novel, Big Girl Panties. THE SWEET SPOT finally tells the sizzling story of two of readers’ favorite characters from Big Girl Panties: Chase Walker, the hunky professional baseball player, and his beautiful, curvy, and exceptionally sassy wife Amanda. Amanda is a successful, levelheaded woman who built her restaurant from scratch. She’s certainly not looking for a prince charming to sweep her off her feet. So when Chase, baseball’s golden boy, begins to pursue her, she barely gives him the time of day. Despite his playboy image, Chase is a monogamist who likes strong women. Amanda is exactly the type he’s been looking to settle down with, but she won’t say yes easily. For Amanda their romance is all too good to be true, can Chase really be this perfect? And then she discovers that squeaky-clean Chase Walker has a spicy little kink. Chase’s fans have no idea that off the field, he likes to indulge in a little passionate spanking from time to time. To her surprise, Amanda discovers a naughty side she never knew she had. Thanks to a tabloid, their secret comes to light and becomes the nation’s favorite water-cooler gossip. Will Amanda give up a little bit of her single-girl freedom for true love with a twist? Or will the pressure of Chase’s stardom spell doom for this sexy couple?
I read The Sweet Spot in one sitting. I was hooked right from the beginning. I loved reading about Chase and Amanda. Their romance was really fun and filled with lots of drama. This is a companion to Stephanie Evanovich's first novel, Big Girl Panties, which I haven't read but now I really want to. If you are a fan of adult contemporary romance, I highly recommend you pick up this book.
When I was reading The Sweet Spot I couldn't help but compare it to 50 Shades of Grey. In many ways I think The Sweet Spot takes the tropes of 50 Shades of Grey and makes them so much better. Amanda has a back bone and she isn't described looks wise as every other female in adult romance. Chase is a genuine guy and I liked that Stephanie Evanovich worked in the slight BDSM aspect of the romance in a subtle way, in a much more real relationship way than other books of the genre. This is a relationship that isn't toxic or unhealthy like so many others of this genre. One of my only problems with this book is that the erotica/BDSM aspects of this came out of nowhere and were kind of cheesy. I think I felt that it was cheesy was because it never really got explained in Chase's backstory; we never got an explanation for his actions. It was just a thing he did that was just had to suddenly expect. I liked the fact that Evanovich kept it pretty tame for most erotica of this genre. I just think that the first half of the book and the second didn't quite mesh well as a cohesive book.
I love Amanda and Chase. I think the plot of their romance was great. It was different to see a famous rich guy who wasn't as arrogant as every other male protagonist in this genre. I really enjoyed their banter at the beginning of the book. I enjoyed seeing them clash and Chase having to chase after her. We do hear from both point of views which was quite nice.
The Sweet Spot is a very addicting read. I couldn't put it down until I finished and I read it in a matter of hours. It has a very fast pace that I loved and kept the story moving. Evanovich didn't feel the need to cover every day of their relationship which worked well for the flow of the plot.
After reading The Sweet Spot, I am planning to pick up future books by Stephanie Evanovich. The Sweet Spot was a fun romance that still was chock full of romance. This book took a great spin on many of the typical romance tropes. I think if you are looking to get into the adult romance and erotica genres, but are looking for a tamer story that still has a lot of tension retaining much more of a light side then The Sweet Spot is the book you should pick up.
