The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach--an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding Highland clans in the year of Our Lord...1743.
Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into intrigues and dangers that may threaten her life...and shatter her heart. For here she meets James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, and becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
OUTLANDER IS AMAZING AND A MUST READ! I had this book on my shelf for months and I had received a free copy from Shelf Awareness. It took the first episode of the TV show to make me read this book and I am so glad I did.
Despite being a daunting 850 pages I was reading through this quite fast. To the point that I was consciously slowing myself down because I didn't want this to end.
I decided not to do a formal review for two reasons. I can't fully verbalize my feels and this book has been published for over 20 years with a huge fan base.
Is phenomenal. If you didn't feel like you were in Scottland in 1743 then I don't think we read the same book. The language is a bit hard to get into, but it makes the experience of reading it even more immersive.
THE TV SHOW
I can't get enough of this show. I have to say shows normally tend to stray a lot of the book. Outlander has stayed very close. There have been minimal changes, but overall it has been extremely close.
I think the casting choices were perfect and after reading the book the TV show has just been my obsession. I wish I didn't have to wait every week. At least I know what will happen, but i just want to see it unfold. AHH I can't wait for the things to happen.
The scale of this show is perfect and Starz has done a magnificent job in its scope of it. I don't know how or why people thought this would be a good movie, because it would limit the story and the plot so much. Starz is definitely taking their time with the book and I am so excited to see where this show goes.
IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE SHOW OR READ THE BOOK WHAT ARE YOU DOING? GO FORTH AND CONQUER IT!
