Meadow Woodson has been trained to survive. This is a prequel to The Murder Complex, by Lindsay Cummings, and it is set in a blood-soaked world where the murder rate is higher than the birth rate. For fans of Moira Young's Dust Lands series, La Femme Nikita, and the movie Hanna.
Meadow Woodson's father calls it The Fear Trials, and it is a rite of passage in their family. Meadow is up against her brother Koi. The Fear Trials will both harden her and make her brave. If Meadow wins, she will get a weapon of her own and the right to leave the Woodsons' houseboat without her father or mother at her side. Set in the violent, complex, and mysterious world of The Murder Complex, and introducing Meadow Woodson—a teenage girl trained to survive no matter what the cost—and her family, who are together for the last time on their houseboat in the Florida Everglades.
The Fear Trials is the prequel novella to The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings. I have been dying to read The Murder Complex and now after reading this novella I am even more excited to read it. I love Lindsay's booktube channel so it is great to read her books finally. The Fear Trials is action packed and violent, but I connected right away with the main character. It was a perfect prequel novella in that it sets up the series world, introduces the characters, and leaves the reader needing more.
I tend to read prequel novellas after I read the first book and I usually love doing that because I am able to understand what is going on better in the novella. Prequel's will give insight into what happened in the first book. I haven't read The Murder Complex yet and I was able to completely understand what was going on in this book. The writing was fantastic and very brutal which has me so excited for the first book.
In YA especially dystopians there tends to never be a strong family unit. I loved that this novella is centered around the Woodson family and what you have to do to protect your family. I definitely can't wait to read more about the family especially after the end of the novella. I also want to see how Meadow deals with her role in the family in the book because she has a lot of weight on her shoulders.
The Fear Trials is a really fast read, I read it on my bus ride to and from school. I definitely recommend this if you are dying to read The Murder Complex or even after you read it. I can't wait to read more books by Lindsay Cummings!
