Review~ A World Apart

with 23 comments

A World Apart
By
David Brown

BLURB:

Demetrius makes his first mistake when he lets his best friend Halcyon marry Eleyna, the love of his life, without saying a word. On the day of the wedding, he walks away from the Elencheran town of Dove's Meadow and joins the army.

He makes his second mistake when the pirate Black Iris tricks him into letting dozens of men, women and children die in a fire. Demetrius is imprisoned in grief and disgrace.

But he can atone. The Black Iris is dead. The Ivory Rose has risen to the top of the pirates and is leading brutal raids on the coast. If Demetrius can capture and kill her, he'll win his pardon.

And then Demetrius discovers the Ivory Rose is Eleyna. He must decide which will be his third mistake: losing his last chance at a pardon or destroying the one woman he's ever loved.

EXCERPT:
From Chapter 6: Eleyna & Halcyon (29617)

Demetrius made no response, he was lost in a battle all of his own making now. The challenge of Halcyon was forgotten, he had overcome that, but he now had to succeed in a new struggle – to be a soldier. Demetrius had decided to turn his back on the shepherd life that his father desperately wanted for him in favour of following and emulating his grandfather. Deep down, Demetrius hoped that if he made his grandfather proud then Granicus would reveal the most sought after secret in all of Dove’s Meadow – why Granicus had chosen not to join the Order and bring untold fame to the town.

Demetrius heard another rumble of thunder and between the Green and Pirels Mountains he saw lightning strike briefly. His clothes were now sodden and his feet were uncomfortable in his shoes but Demetrius was beyond such constraints. Dove’s Meadow didn’t feel like it was just below him to the left. Instead, it was almost as if just the narrow walk along the perimeter wall existed and that losing his balance either way would see him fall into a void of nothingness. Everything hinged on Demetrius’ continued steps.

Granicus had once told Demetrius of one of the rebellions he had fought when he was in the army. The rebels had lined up to take on the might of the Himordian army on a sodden battlefield with rain, thunder and lightning doing nothing to turn any man or woman from the conflict. Demetrius imagined he was in that moment now, facing the same dangers that his grandfather had faced.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:
David Brown could be considered a fantasy fanatic, especially since he has spent the last 10 years developing a 47,000-year history for his fictional world of Elenchera. When converting his obsession into literary form, David commits himself to a rigorous writing and editing process before his work can meet his approval. Combined with the critical eye of his wife and a BA Hons in History and English, David's dedication leads him to his goal of inspiring readers through heartfelt stories and characters.
Although David is inspired primarily by fantasy fiction, he also finds his muse in the form of anime, world cinema, history, and biographies. His own books, Fezariu's Epiphany and A World Apart, and the in-progress Ansel's Remorse and The Stars Beneath the Parapets combine aspects from worlds both old and new into compelling tales of a world not soon forgotten. David himself certainly does not lack a spirit of adventure; in fact, he left his job in 2007 in order to spend a month travelling. Second only to meeting and marrying his wife, David counts this as one of the most amazing experiences of his life.

My Review~

A World Apart is an amazing fantasy novel that you won't be able to get enough of. When I read a fantasy novel the entire book is dependent upon the world that is created in it. A World Apart is creative and like nothing you have ever read before. I liked that there were Pirates in it I don't think I have read a book ever that had Pirates in it .

If I was to say a problem that I had with this story it would be the character names. Not they were bad and I didn't like them I just am kind of unsure of how to say them. So in a way it really bothered my reading experience because I would stumble over the names in my head pronouncing them different ways every time, which bothered me.

Other than that I really enjoyed reading this book it was exciting and different. You can definitely see the amount of development that the author put into the world building which is very admirable!

ARC Review~ Splintered by A.G Howard

with 2 comments
SplinteredTitle- Splintered
Author- A.G Howard
Genre- YA Fantasy
Format - ARC
Recieved - Won
Published January 1st 2013 by Amulet Books Imprint of Abrams

Book Description~
Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.
When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

Goodreads/Amazon/B&N

My Review~

Before reading Splintered I had never really been very enamored with the world of Wonderland. I hadn't read the book but I enjoyed the movies. So to say that after reading Splintered I want to read the original by Lewis Carroll tells you how much I enjoyed reading Splintered. When someone asked how it was all I have to say was weird but in an amazing way.

Splintered follows Alyssa Gardner a young girl who is the decedent of Alice Liddel who went down the rabbit and told her story. But every female in the line after has gone crazy talking about Wonderland. I didn't expect this story to be as dark as it was, which was mostly reflected in the twists made about the well known characters from the story.

The major love interest in the story is Jeb. Alyssa's long friend that she has a huge crush on. I think it was great to have him with her in Wonderland than be on the journey alone it created more drama and I always love a good love story. Then there is Morpheus who is the portrayal of the Caterpillar and he is a tragic character, his major fault being his love for Alyssa and what it drives him to do also his love for himself.

Whenever I thought I knew what was going to happen it would all be turned around because of the information Alyssa was getting from other wasn't always true. I enjoyed all the twists and turns but at the end there were so many it became hard to keep up with.

I liked that this story wrapped up really nicely and cutely too. I know that it at the moment is a stand alone but it is just one of those world's that I couldn't get enough of and would love to read more of. Also I would love to read more about Morpheus who was such a complex and intriguing character even though I was definitely rooting for Jeb/Alyssa but I want me some Morpheus!

You are going love this take on Wonderland and be left wanting more!

Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky , #1)Title Under The Never Sky
Author Veronica Rossi
Series Under the Never Sky #1
Genre YA Science Fiction
Format Paperback
Received Won
Published January 3rd 2012 Harper Collins

Book Description~

Since she'd been on the outside, she'd survived an Aether storm, she'd had a knife held to her throat, and she'd seen men murdered.

This was worse.

Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland—known as The Death Shop—are slim. If the cannibals don't get her, the violent energy storms will. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He's wild—a savage—and her only hope of staying alive.

A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile—everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria's help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must come together to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky

My Review~
If your a fan of scifi futuristic novels that have some post- apocalyptic qualities to it then Under The Never Sky is the book for you! I loved this story it was addicting and swept me off my feet. It was a quick read and took me only two days.

This story had so many great things going for it. Veronica wrote about this amazing setting that is so unique and brand new, I really liked that it wasn't just some futuristic city like so many other stories. It was darker and much harsher environment on the outside and in the pods there is a lot of secrets we don't know yet. For me what was the best part of this book was the duel Point of View we read alternating chapters from Aria and Perry our two main characters who come from two very different places and become allies, commence love story. But it became a lot more than that and I enjoyed the fact that they hated each other for the better part of the book. I am a sucker for the little things and loved the symbolic meaning behind Aria and Perry's names and the fact that in some ways they connected.

Aria and Perry were fantastic main characters who although were quite flawed brought out the best in each other. I can't wait to see where their relationship goes in Through The Ever Night the sequel now that they are no longer on the run and are the leaders of their people.

So for me if I could point out something I didn't like it would be my confusion over the Aether. I want to know where this came from and what the hell it is. Which end up coming with the fatal flaw for most Dystopian type stories is that some never tell you how the world got that way. How did some people end up in the Pods and not everyone else. Also I want to know the relationship of Aria's parents and how that developed and which tribe he came from. Hopefully these issues get resolved in later books!

Have you read this yet? I really liked it! Through the Evernight Just came out definitely want to pick that up soon! But so many great books came out this month so excited!

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!

So this Challenge Posts will get you an extra entry in the giveaway form which is somewhat still a surprise!

So in a blog post or youtube video which ever you prefer I want to know which book deserved the hype and which book didn't? (Preferably one you read during the readathon but what ever comes to mind)
Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky , #1)Under The Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Definitely deserves the hype! There were so many little things about the book I enjoyed from the world building to the symbolism behind the characters names! And the dual pov! Just was a perfect book and I always love a good romance especially one that starts out from the characters hating each other!

Marked (House of Night, #1)

So a book that did not deserve the hype it got from my opinion is Marked! (I read this awhile back)

The main character was not like-able nor relate able and the concept to me was just chaotic.

If you did read this and enjoyed it go read The Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead which is TEN TIMES BETTER!

So I would love to know what you think leave your posts in the rafflecopter and in the comments below!

About Tara:
Tara Fuller writes novels. Some about grim reapers. Some about witches. All of course are delightfully full of teen angst and kissing. Tara grew up in a one stop light town in Oklahoma where once upon a time she stayed up with a flash light reading RL Stine novels and only dreamed of becoming a writer. She has a slight obsession with music and a shameless addiction for zombie fiction, Mystery Science Theater, and black and white mochas. Tara no longer lives in a one stop light town. Now she lives with her family in a slightly larger town in North  Carolina where they have at least three stoplights.
