Review- Wither by Lauren DeStefano
So yet another Dystopian I am really enjoying them this one was rather different from most of them that I have read so I decided to give it a shot plus I saw for 2.99 in a store and was like why not I would waste 3 bucks on a hardcover if I didn't like it! But I did even though there are somethings that I have to complain about. I just want my cake and have to eat it too I am not quite sure how that saying goes!
Amazon Description in case like me you had no clue what this is about besides it having an awesome cover that has nothing to do with the story I swear!-
By age sixteen, Rhine Ellery has four years left to live. She can thank modern science for this genetic time bomb. A botched effort to create a perfect race has left all males with a lifespan of 25 years, and females with a lifespan of 20 years. Geneticists are seeking a miracle antidote to restore the human race, desperate orphans crowd the population, crime and poverty have skyrocketed, and young girls are being kidnapped and sold as polygamous brides to bear more children.
When Rhine is kidnapped and sold as a bride, she vows to do all she can to escape. Her husband, Linden, is hopelessly in love with her, and Rhine can’t bring herself to hate him as much as she’d like to. He opens her to a magical world of wealth and illusion she never thought existed, and it almost makes it possible to ignore the clock ticking away her short life. But Rhine quickly learns that not everything in her new husband’s strange world is what it seems. Her father-in-law, an eccentric doctor bent on finding the antidote, is hoarding corpses in the basement. Her fellow sister wives are to be trusted one day and feared the next, and Rhine is desperate to communicate to her twin brother that she is safe and alive. Will Rhine be able to escape--before her time runs out?
Together with one of Linden's servants, Gabriel, Rhine attempts to escape just before her seventeenth birthday. But in a world that continues to spiral into anarchy, is there any hope for freedom?
My Thoughts and Opinions-
This is so not your regular dystopian. That should be a tag line if this was a movie haha was that too corny of a joke maybe. Besides the scientific concept behind this of curing cancer and other infectious diseases and the after affects to that it just reminded me of a polygamous Pride and Prejudice. Is that just me? That weird-ed
me out a lot.
Don't get me wrong me wrong it had a great hook and really kept me interested.(As I say every time when I enjoyed a book but aspects of it just bothered the complete shit out of me) I was just so insanely intrigued by the premise of this book of an aftermath of curing basically everything that as a population control mother nature genetically affects the age people die at. The whole thing of girls being kidnapped and put in these marriages was just so daunting and scary but thinking about that goes on now as Human trafficking just not for marriage.
The main character Rhine bothered me a lot she was just so wishy washy about her feelings. She hates Linden her husband oh wait she is falling in love with him. She wants to leave but then again she might want to stay. Like make up your damn mind girl. It does make you want to continue reading to find out what she will do but I had whip lash from her indecisiveness. I personally wanted her to be with Linden. None of this was his fault, he was just a nice guy with an evil controlling father. I just felt bad for him. I felt like Rhine was the only one who truly love him we know the one girl who didn't because Cecily was just a little kid. And a big pain in the you know what, she was such a little brat. I couldn't stand her at all but after she had the baby I felt bad her just a little bit. Then she had to go and help them in the end but I still don't like her.
The end wasn't as satisfying as I wished it was. Her running away with the boy that worked in the house. Who was cute and all but why couldn't she be with her husband. He better go after her. There were obviously things I happened to not enjoy but I did have fun reading this book I started it the night I got in then finished it the next morning. I just had to know what happened next so it does make me want to continue the series.
The next book is Fever I hope to be reading it soon!
